Project Title: Epic City
The company had been working on a new project which was based on a third person game likened to Final Fantasy. For this project I was tasked with creating at least four large cities in a range of cultural and geographic locations. These cities had to be epic and collossal.
Research/Moodboards:
To start with I just created some moodboards to help me generate ideas so I kept the first two boards quite varied. After making these I started to form my ideas and come up with some unique cities.
Development:
Originally I had come up with five different cities which is more than required however I had to drop one because of time management and I would prefer to give in four completed cities than five rushed cities.
My first city was the city that is alive. I designed this as a city thriving on the back of an animal. I explored different animals in the inital process with sketches then refined my ideas.
My second city was originally a floating city, but I iterated on the idea and it changed into a rock that people built upon and made it fly so they would move around. A lot of these paintings a quite stylised and kind of Studio Ghibli syle which I actually think works.
For my third city I had planned to create a desert city. I had iterated my idea slightly making it into a more weird sci fi desert city which is strange and unique. However I had to scrap this design as I figured it would take too long to complete as its quite vast and I already had four other designs. In the future I Would go back to it and also do some final paintings of this city.
My fourth city is probably the one I like most. It's very sci-fi, set in space by a black hole. This city is made out of huge rings that move together and contain the city. Interstellar played a big part in inspiring this city.
For my final city I wanted to create a city made in nature. I wanted to incorporate either leaves and/or trees to hold the city. I ended up designing a city that was built onto giant leaves surrounded by a vast forest. I wasn't too pleased with these designs so I will go back to it in the next week and refine the final paintings.
Final Outcomes:
Whale City:
Flying City:
Sci-fi City:
Nature City:
Here is my completed time plan for this project.

Conclusion:
After reviewing my work I am glad that I tried this project as it forced me to try something new and it rally showed me where I needed to improve especially in terms of my digital painting.
I chose to do an environment project to push myself as I'm not very confident in painting environments. I have managed my time well in this project however I need to take into account how slowly I paint. As I'm new to digital painting still, I only started last year, I'm still getting up to speed on how to use Photoshop professionally, this project has pushed me to become more efficient and quicker at painting.
I plan to go back to a lot of these paintings and refine them in the next week, as you can see there is only one nature city painting as I didn't want to rush everything and hand in something terrible so I have decided to work on it more next week.
