Final Week

This is the last week on Japanese folklore. It’s flown by so quickly even though I feel like I’ve been working on this project for, well, forever. Once this week is finished and before we move onto the next culture me and Georgia have decided to have a meeting together and with tutors so we can discuss how the five weeks have gone and if we need to adjust any plans for the next five weeks.

Personally I found that the amount of characters I had to complete in that five weeks was a bit pushed however I did manage it. To avoid having to rush any designs I want to make a more detailed and accurate timeplan for the next culture. Also we have left ample time, the last three weeks, to work on anything that needs to be refined and get some 3D dioramas completed.

So with a busy week ahead I got straight to work on Monday and firstly finished off the exterior designs for the potion store after completed some colour palette designs. After that I then painting up a more refined and improved exterior design.

As the player can go into these shops I wanted to design the interior as well. The designs are rough however that is all we need at this stage. I got the potion shop interior completed on Monday, I mainly followed the exterior colour palette and just modifying it for the interior.

Tuesday the work on the stores carried on. Next I had to complete the weapons store. Firstly I iterated on the sketches I had completed for the weapons store to make the exterior more refined and interesting. After choosing the colour scheme we both preferred I moved onto the interior which basically followed the same process as the last store.

I realised that I had totally forgotten about the final painting to for the Kirin creature. So I went back and moved the character around a little and gave the painting some mood and atmosphere. I'm not overly pleased with this final painting however I've made time in the time plan of the next project to refine some of these designs or re paint a final.

On Thursday I created a little Inventory for the game, showing different potions, weapon upgrades, and several pick ups that are also collectibles throughout the game. I actually found this really fun to do as we have a good idea of what the game would be like if we were creating it.

I also came up with some interesting ideas on Thursday for the Oni demon character. Mainly depicted as a red or blue ogre like creature with either multiple eyes or arms I wanted to do something different to that, so I started coming up with design for a female demon character. I started with designing the head, I wanted her to be creepy, grotesque but not too much as the main character is a little girl. When designing the Oni demon I chose bright red skin, with big black eyes and many wrinkles and disfigurements to the face.

Friday and the last day working on the Japanese culture and I still had a few more characters to complete. Firstly I got back to work on the Oni demon character, moving onto colour palette designs and clothing iterations me and Georgia decided on the dark red and black colour scheme for this character. After doing some final iterations on the face, using different horns, teeth and hair I completed the final painting for this character. And to be honest she looks pretty evil and badass so I’m happy. I also did all the work for this character on my iPad which was different but also fun.

Nearing the end of the day I got to work on the Tengu creature. I wasn’t sure which route I wanted to take, the creature which is more man or the one which is more bird. In the end after doing some more research I chose the creature which is mainly bird. Firstly I explored some initial ideas, a few of which I liked and many that were really not working for me.

So I kinda started from scratch again and came up with something I was happy with. I then moved onto working on colour and iterating the clothing of the Tengu. After deliberating with Georgia about which iteration to choose we decided on the third design. When working on the final painting however I chose to add in some elements from the other designs like the straw hat and also some assets. I’m actually pretty pleased with this final painting.

The final bit of work I had to complete for this culture was the Amikiri creature. This is described as a lobster like creature with a beak which flies through the air like fish swim through water. It’s also known for cutting netting especially fishing nets. This character is mischievous so I classed it as a lesser enemy and more of a nuisance to the main character. After drawing some studies of lobsters I decided to add all the elements together and come up with my own final design. I wanted it to be different from what already out there, and what is out there is just multiple versions of the same image to be honest. I feel like I captured the mischievous nature of this creature in the final painting and that’s all I wanted.

Next week is the first week we are starting on the Inuit culture. It is also another five week project designing creatures from this folklore to add to the game.
