Creepy creatures

Monday meant a new week and a new creature to get working on. I chose to work on a creature called Pal-Rai-Yuk, another bloody sea creature, however it’s described as a fox headed creature with 4 arms that end in paws, and the tail of a fish or whale, which is weird and interesting so no worries.
After coming up with a few ideas we chose which was best and I started on iterations of that design. Considering the value studies and colour studies are a bit rushed and not my best work, I am pretty happy with the final design and painting. It’s weird and cool in my opinion and that’s really what I was going for.
I tried to base the final design on the way the angler fish lights up that antennae on its head to attract prey. I figured that this creature could do the same however the lights project from its tail.

Midweek I was a bit bored of going through the same process over and over again with character designs so I moved onto working on some environment designs. I have a few environments to concept, one of which is just an empty tundra scene, however I plan to make the landscape interesting. I got two small studies completed which I really enjoyed in the end which is surprising as normally environments are not my thing.
I'd say I definitely need to improve on mood and lighting in all of my paintings, I plan on doing a load more studies of environments for concepts in the next few weeks.
Thursday I’d had an idea for a creature which technically isn’t on my list of things to do but I had a good idea and I really wanted to do it so I started on that. The night before I was watching Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and the werewolf part gave me an idea for a creature called Keelut, this is a hairless dog which roams the tundra leaving no footprints. But back to Harry Potter, the skinny and fairly hairless design of Lupin as a werewolf really intrigued me and I decided that a design like that would be amazing for the Keelut.
I made a few ref moodboards to really nail this character, one of which contains werewolf concepts and some screengrabs from the film, the other ref sheet has images of hairless dogs, it's a Mexican breed and is completely hairless. I plan to use that ref when painting the skin tone.
So the next day I started on designing the character, at first I did a few studies of the Harry Potter design, then I started to iterate upon it and come up with some interesting designs by elongating the arms and legs even more and making the creature really skinny and bony.

I am a bit behind this week and after today I'm in Wales until Wednesday but thanks to my Ipad I can work when I'm there, then I've got Thursday and Friday to sort everything out. See you then!
