This week I spent most of my time working on a creature called Tammatuyuq, it's a cannibal creature which lures in mothers with children so it can steal them and eat them.

First of all I didn't want this creature to look like a generic Inuit person but more of a wild creature that you wouldn't want to run into on a dark, cold night.

First of all I thought about body shape and I tried to give this character a bit of a strange silhouette.

I had an idea where this creature could wear traditional Inuit masks to cover it's face as it lures the children away from their mothers. So on this first page I drew out the body design I liked, some greyscale masks using images I found on Pinterest, and also some face designs. I was going for a creepy face, of course.

Next I used value studies to come up with ideas for the patterns on the creature. I tried numerous designs like stripes, spots and different types of fur.

The designs marked in green are the preferred designs.

Below is the designs for the mask. I used a lot of references to design these masks. After getting feedback from Georgia we decided a creepy mask wouldn't work too well as the mask is used to lure the children. So in the end we chose the ones that are marked in green.

After designing the mask I moved onto the face, on this page I also refined the design of the final chosen mask.

Finally I painted some different colour designs for the mask, in the end me and Georgia both like the wooden looking designs.

I was a bit stuck when it came to the colour designs for the creature so in the end I tried to keep it simple. We both preferred the lighter coloured designs.

These are the final two designs, collectively we chose the design on the right with the lighter shade of wood.

After choosing the final design I painted up the actual final. As I mentioned before I was going down the creepy route so hopefully it looks pretty weird. I think it does!

Next week I'm working on some other Inuit creatures and environments even though we are now moving onto the Greek folklore section of the project. Wish me luck catching up.
