Last Week of FMP

After working on environments for the past week I was happy to work on characters for the last week of my final major project.

I began by working on the Cerberus creature from Greek mythology. I chose to work on this character more because I wasn't happy with the rushed final I had done at the time, and I know I can do better.

I had gotten a start on the creature when I asked Will my mentor for some advice on how to improve the design so far.

The feedback he gave me on lighting really helped me improve the focal point of the painting. He also reminded me to always use reference, I had to use a lot for this creature especially the feet.

This is the finished painting of the Cerberus character. I chose to keep the background very simple to emphasize the lighting. I'm proud of this painting and it seems to be working for me, I chose to carry on with this process for the last few characters I am going back to.

I had some really good feedback on the Oni demon character from Japanese folklore so I decided to go back to that design and have a finalised painting for another 'bad' character.

For this character I took Will's advice and lengthened the legs so the proportion was correct, I also tried to add into more curves and rhythm the design. This leads the eye from the face down to the feet of the character.

Finally I wanted to return to the design of a character from Inuit folklore, as I had a trend of bad characters I decided to choose my best bad guy from Inuit mythology. The Tammatuyuq was one of my favourite and better designs out of my FMP.

This is some of the really helpful feed back from Will. I took his advice and iterated some of the design, like changing the shape of the weapon this character carries to make the design more interesting.

I really want to come back to this character again in the future as it's creepy and weird and I could still refine this design.

At this point all work has been handed in the book included, and the only thing left to do is to refine the character line up ready for prints for degree show. Here's a little sneak peak....

Post mortem blog post will be up soon!
